My Next Project

Yesterday I took delivery of about 40 face cord of wood for my woodburner. The only problem is they are long logs that will have to be unpiled, cut and split into usable size.

These are now piled about 8-10 ft. high behind the woodburner. And as an extra added "bonus" one of the logs has a bee hive in it. So if I can get rid of the bees, my reward will be fresh honey! I wonder what burning honey smells like???

Love to all!

Progress, but not finished.....yet

The Ginky Weeds have been quite a construction site this week. On Monday the concrete contractor arrived to prepare to install a concrete sidewalk to the shop and a concrete driveway. He expected to be finished today, but the weather was threatening and he decided to hold of the finish until Monday. Here's the new sidewalk; I'm SOOOO glad to not have to walk on the old soggy pavers anymore!
The driveway is coming along nicely, about two thirds complete. It's a long one, about the length of a football field, so is taking some time to complete. We won't be able to drive on it until a week after installation, but it will be well worth the wait. We are currently using "Miller Lane" behind the house for access to and from the roads.
Now on to the next project......the retaining wall and steps to the basement walkout. I've been working on this for almost two weeks now and it's finally in the home stretch. In my last post I included a picture of the beginnings of the entry steps from the bottom level. Here is what it looks like now. Note that the retaining wall is now complete!!!
Here's the curve in the wall as it blends from the side of the pool to the steps. Must be all the measuring and remeasuring paid off. The new wall from below was right on the same level as the bottom of the retaining wall when I got to that point. It was a big relief to see that come together!
And here are the steps that we've all been waiting for. They are not capped yet and won't be until the old concrete retaining wall is textured and colored and concrete is poured in the lower level landing. Once that's done, this project will rapidly be completed. That will be one big item to check off my "To Do" list! Of course, it wasn't easy. I had to work in a drain for the downspout on this end of the house so that it winds behind the steps, then inside the wall and exits below the base of the wall. I also had to relevel and shim the fence posts so that the gate is properly aligned. Those will be cemented in which should retain alignment.
That's the status from here and a pictorial explanation of why when any of you have called, Mom has answered the phone. When complete, I will move on to building drywells in the front and back of the house to manage the water drainage around the house, including the sump discharge in the front yard. Then I can bring in topsoil and seed around the walls and the areas of tearup for the drywells. Will it all get done this summer? I hope so, but time will tell. With vacation coming in two weeks, guess I'd better find a higher gear to shift into!
Love to all!

Boy or Girl????????????????

Okay everybody. Let's have a contest to see who picks the sex, name, size and date of births of the Jankowski babies. Vicki and Diana are going into their 16th week, I believe, and Diana has a dr's appointment this week and I think Vicki may have one next week. Let's just have some fun and see who guesses best. Needless to say the parents and grandparents are very eager for them to come.
Take care and have a good week. Love to all.

Canvasses

As promised, here is a picture of the other 3 canvasses we had made. They are printed 20x20 on stretched canvas. We have them hanging over the tv in our bedroom. I love these little (actually huge!) faces!

Hope y'all are having a great week!

The Start of The Finish

It's time to finish a project that I started a year ago. I'm happy with the results with the retaining wall, but I left the hardest part for last; building the steps from the pool patio to the walkout basement. I've spent the last two days working on this and parts of a couple of other days designing the layout. Here's what I'm starting with:

Here's the start of the project. After the two days, the slow, but satisfying progress:

The steps have to be started from the bottom, so it will be a challenge to properly meet the existing retaining wall and have a reasonable step at the top. I've measured and remeasured and remeasured, so I'm sure it won't meet, but I tried :) It all has to be capped when the step construction is done and that will signal the finish of the project. Thank goodness for the proper tools; the tractor, without which I simply couldn't do this, and the truck, which has already hauled 4 tons of aggregate and will haul more before this is complete.

Lot's more to do next week after returning from our Car Show weekend in Ohio. We are leaving tomorrow and will return on Monday. I'm looking forward to cruising in the El Camino again to at least one, if not more car shows. We will be attending a very large annual event on Sunday.

Wishing you all a fun and happy weekend!

Love to all!

What do you think??

We decided to have our family picture from Michigan City printed on a 26x40 stretched canvas and it finally arrived today. What do you think? I think we're going to hang it in the dining room. I will also post a picture of the other 3 canvases we had made...one extreme closeup of each of the kids.
Hope all is well! Marina is home now and had a great first day! :O)
